Nel 1959 E. Penrose evidenziava come l’organizzazione dell’attività produttiva dell’impresa si basi sulla percezione che essa ha dell’adeguamento della produzione rispetto ai suoi mercati, più che su una valutazione oggettiva di tale adeguatezza. In tal modo sottolineava non solo l’importanza di identificare la natura dei fattori che determinano il comportamento delle imprese, ma anche come la valutazione di tali fattori non possa prescindere dal contesto produttivo all’interno del quale essi emergono. In 1959, Penrose highlighted how the firm's organisation of economic activity is based on its perception about the adjustment of production to the market, more than on objective evaluation. So, he underlined not just the importance to identify the nature of the determinants of firm behaviour, but also how the assessment of these factors must consider the production context where they originate.
